The article is about a man who fights for equal rights for homosexuals in Belize. The article explains how his actions are overwhelmingly opposed in Belize due to the Christian faith being extremely strong in Belize. The man, Caleb Orozco, is so opposed because of his efforts that he has received death threats. The Supreme Court of Belize was needed to rule on his case about gay rights, so that his extremely controversial case could be legally settled.
I find that a case about gay rights being taken to the Supreme Court in Belize to not be surprising. Although, I personally believe homosexuals should have equal rights, some people who are extremely religious do not feel the same. I do not feel that death threats made against the gay rights activist, Caleb Orozco, are justified. While, I can understand that many people in Belize dislike him for obvious reasons, I do not condone the way in which he is treated by others in Belize.
This article is important for politics in Belize because it displays that some minorities are not protected by the government in Belize. The majority of people in Belize do not support equal rights for homosexuals. This leads to such people as Orozco being oppressed and discriminated against in their home countries. With many people being discriminated against, many people may leave Belize in favor of countries that protect the rights of gays.
